The 'Coral-Sol' Station is a PET-bottle-based floating system that will be installed in Ilha Grande (RJ). It is focused on research and management of the 'coral-sol' species and local marine environmental education. The project aims to boost the Brazilian Biodiversity Institute's (BrBio) actions concerning the mitigation of biological pollution in the region through actions to remove and monitor the 'coral-sol' species and democratise knowledge about marine life based on citizen science.
The 'Coral-Sol' Station, a project developed for a final BA project in Product Design (PUC-Rio) by Monique Roque and supervised by Professor Augusto Seibel in 2021, significantly impacts Brazilian biodiversity. The project was the proud winner of the Latin American Design (LAD) Awards 2022 in the Student / Product Design / Sustainability category, a testament to its innovative and sustainable approach.
The Station is built from materials with low environmental impact and allows a greater flow of people, enabling the training of new divers for removal actions. Furthermore, it values ergonomics by developing a retractable pulley system and has innovated by creating a new system for processing the skeletons of the 'coral-sol' species. Another issue to be highlighted is its potential as an advocacy action allowing the arrival of visitors to these places.
